Field Notebook Manifesto

Why a laboratory notebook?

Things I’m trying, building, testing, and occasionally abandoning.

Abhi's workspace
A quiet corner for experiments.
Rules of this notebook:
  • 1. Document in real time.
  • 2. Failures are first-class data.
  • 3. Never polish away embarrassing mistakes.
  • 4. Always leave room for play.

The modern web is full of polished outcomes. Case studies only show the winning pitch. Social media only shows the highlight reel. Portfolios pretend everything was a deliberate 5-step sprint toward genius.

Real life doesn’t work like that. Real learning happens in the dark corners: when a Raspberry Pi automation turns your bedroom into a football stadium light show at 3:15 AM, or when you buy camera gear only to discover you loathe performative video recording.

What this site is NOT:

  • Not a portfolio: I'm not pitching services or trying to win awards.
  • Not a traditional blog: Entries aren't thought pieces; they are empirical observations.
  • Not a productivity dashboard: Success isn't measured in unbroken green GitHub squares or optimize-every-microsecond obsession.

The Status Taxonomy

Every entry carries one of five statuses. They all have equal dignity:

RUNNING
Active in the wild right now. Collecting daily logs and field notes.
COMPLETED
Completed its predetermined window. Verdict rendered with key learnings.
FAILED
The hypothesis crashed into reality. The most valuable learning entries.
ABANDONED
Quit early because life is too short for experiments that drain your soul.
IDEA
A question waiting on deck with rules and initial hypotheses outlined.

If you have an idea for an experiment I should run, or want to discuss the findings of any entry, you can reach out.
